Lockdown means a lot of time on our hands that we don’t usually. This calls for exploring new music. One can never have enough songs to listen to on repeat. Bangers from well-known artists find a place in many playlists. Yet, some other artists with great music often go overshadowed. With great music and lyrics that leave you in a trance, here are some underrated artists to listen to.

Wallows

Based in Los Angeles, Wallows is an American alternative rock band. The trio includes Dylan Minnette, Cole Preston, and Braeden Lemasters. The band started releasing songs in 2017, independently, starting with “Pleaser”. The single reached number two on the Spotify Global Viral 50 chart. They released their debut studio album, Nothing Happens, in 2019. Following this, they released their second extended play Remote in 2020.

Favorite tracks from the artist :

Scrawny — The song talks about finding confidence in an intimidating crowd. A crowd that seems to be cooler than you. It is about cherishing things about yourself that others may not.
Are you bored yet? — The single found a strong audience with more than 30 million Spotify streams to date. It appears on the album,’ Nothing Happens’. The track even features Clairo. It talks about being in self-doubt while in a relationship.

Clairo

Known by her stage name Clairo, Claire Elizabeth Cottrill is an American singer-songwriter.
She released her first EP, titled Do U Wanna Fall In Love? in 2014. She gained prominence with her song “Pretty Girl”, released in 2017. The song soon went viral. She released her first full-length album, Immunity, in 2019.

Favorite tracks from the artist :

Sofia — “Sofia” is the third single from the album, Immunity. It is about Clairo’s crushes on women named Sofia. She talks about the time when she was discovering her sexuality, in the song.
Flaming Hot Cheetos — The song got its name simply because Clairo was eating them while she was making the demo. Clairo stated that one of her past relationships inspired the song. The song speaks of conflict in one’s head during the relationship.

Chelsea Cutler

You will find a handful of untruthful tracks that feel suggested by a label to an artist. Chelsea Cutler is nothing of the sort, she is the exact opposite. Her new ‘How To Be Human’ album is captivating to a whole new level.
The 22-year-old singer got her break with Louis The Child in 2015. With a span of five years, she has become one of the strongest storytellers in the field.

Favorite tracks from the artist :

Please — “please” is a Jeremy Zucker and Chelsea cutler collab, with a theme of agonizing love. The song expresses desperation for love. ‘Please’ talks about a relationship that lies on the brink of falling apart. The emotional connection between the two being the thread holding the relationship together.
Sometimes — The song recites Chelsea’s point of view on a relationship. The lyrics tell a story of a relationship about commitment issues and worries. It speaks of the dilemma of being in a relationship and confusion about feelings.

Rex Orange County

Known by stage name Rex Orange County, Alex O’Connor is an English singer-songwriter. Rex’s songs are often said to be sarcastic, wit-fledged, and full of charming rough edges.
His genre fluctuates between contemporary jazz, R&B, and electronic. According to one of his interviews, he claims:
“If I could do anything close to Frank Ocean musically, then that’s it.”

Favorite songs from the artist :

Corduroy Dreams — It is, without a doubt, one of the songs that broke Rex Orange Country into the mainstream media. He released the song initially on Soundcloud as a part of his debut album.
It’s not the same anymore — The song is, in a way, about growing up. But along the song, Rex seems to be displaying symptoms of depression. He has a lot of difficulties expressing his fears and doubts. Though, the song does come to a happy conclusion. In the end, he makes peace with what has happened in the past.

Plug your earphones in, connect your speakers, switch the pretty lights on, and feel the magic flow. These artists will see to the rest. I sincerely believe that Jane Austen spoke for all when she said, “Without music, life would be a blank to me.”
